Handbag Humpday, Yadouga Bags Launch Spring 2012: PAMELA PEKERMAN

She’s the cool girl with the effortlessly put together ensemble and those perfect accessories you would never have thought to combine. She’s clever, creative and colorful. To me, SHE is Kirsten Yadouga Schwinn, the designer behind what will be the handbag markets next name-to-know – Yadouga. Yadouga is an assortment of handbags and accessories that exude boho luxury, or as Kirsten calls it “un-done luxury”. Think 70s glamour, a la Bianca Jagger and Jerry Hall. The Italian leather, impeccable craftsmanship and attention to real-world wearability is what I would expect from a designer whose pedigree includes stints at Versace and Reed Krakoff.

For those who may not recall, I drooled over Kirsten’s accessory style in a recent post about her love affair with cobalt blue, specifically her YSL ring. You’ll see the ring and color pop up in Yadouga's Spring 2012 lookbook.

Meet Joy Mangano, HSN Superstar and Power Woman: PAMELA PEKERMAN

Joy Mangano and Pamela Pekerman at Joy's 10th Anniversary
with HSN press preview
Dear Bagistas,

In addition to Jennifer Lopez, Karen Robinovitz, Kelly Ripa and Kathryn Finney, I officialyl have a new female power woman to lust after and admire in a totally professional way – Joy Mangano.

If that name doesn’t ring a bell, you clearly don’t watch enough HSN. If you did, you would have seen Joy selling her wares, which include Huggable Hangers, velvety hangers that are lightweight, ultra-thin, and the #1 selling product in the history of HSN or Clothes It All Luxury Carry All Luggage Set which lets you turn your roller into a portable closet with drawers. And then of course, you can catch Joy cooking up a storm with cutie-pie chef Todd English using their revolutionary GreenPan collection that uses Thermolon non-stick technology – the first completely PTFE-free (look that stuff up, it’s nasty!) non-stick cookware.

Although I’ve worked on HSN in the past, I never had the pleasure of meeting Joy, so I was thrilled to have her personally present her best selling, and soon-to-be best selling, inventions at a press presentation held at the Buckingham Hotel.

Joy Mangano showcases her Clothes It All Luxury Carry All Luggage
available at HSN
I had a 10am appointment and greeting me was this diminutive – in size but NOT in energy or presence – woman dressed in a sleek black pencil skirt and draped red blouse, with perfectly quaffed hair and a French manicure. Boy was I glad for my emergency, AM hair blowout! But, from our 45 minute appointment (which I actually thought would be 15-20 minutes) I learned Joy isn’t just a pretty face pedaling products. She is woman who, as HSN’s executive vice president Bill Brand puts it, “solves simple problem.” She reacts to her ahhhaaa moments, rather than sit on the sidelines and let others come up with the same concept. I love that!

Ladies, we should all try to channel a little big of Joy’s joy – love what we do, follow thru with our convictions, believe in ourselves and know our business inside and out. Yes, that last one is important! Don’t just be the face of something. Don’t just answer phones. Don’t just file tax papers. Don’t just go through the motions. To move up in life – even if you don’t plan to have your own company – it’s important to know the ins and outs of the field you are in. The important people will notice – trust me. When I was in college applying for magazine jobs, I used to review changes in the mastheads. I knew all the editors and their assistants – and last stories they worked on – as well as who owned what magazine and how they acquired it!

Meet Engie Hassan, Designer, Stylist, Bergdorf Goodman Personal Shopper: PAMELA PEKERMAN

Dear Bagistas,

It’s been a long and inspiring day. What a way to jump back into the work week after a vacation! Before I call it a day, I want to introduce you to a very exciting gal who is one of my Power Women – the ladies that give me the mojo to keep pushing and growing my business. Her name is Engie Hassan and we met about two years ago at an event hosted by another power woman, Kathryn Finney aka The Budget Fashionista. Engie approached me as I was getting some wine. I can’t recall what we talked about in that brief, first encounter, but I can recount her immaculate ensemble and infectious energy. “This girl was going places,” I thought.

Fast forward two years and Engie has gone from Vogue staffer to personal shopper at Bergdorf Goodman and the Pierre Hotel to image consultant to stylist for celebrities and royalty. Last month, Engie realized yet another dream when she launched her premier fashion collection, “Rouge et Noir,” as part of “Once Upon A Time,” a fashion presentation to benefit the New York Restoration Project’s MillionTreesNYC initiative. As Engie puts it, “My collection is inspired by the modest, classical style of the stars and starlets of the bygone Golden age of Hollywood.” As a lover of sensuality over sexually and classical versus trend chaser, I happily co-chaired Engie’s event. Below are some sketches of her first collection. I can’t wait to see what future season’s have in store as this multi-talented stylist and designer tweaks and toils away. And, Engie, I will take you up on the offer of borrowing a few pieces here and there ;)

Meeting Stylist and YRB Fashion Editor Darius Baptist: PAMELA PEKERMAN

Dear Bagistas,

Before I call it a night, I have another interesting person (and story) to share with you. Last Friday, while being shot for a feature profile in YRB Magazine on me as a handbag collector,- pretty cool, hu? - I had the pleasure of meeting the magazine's fashion director Darius Baptist. Darius is a trusted fashionisto and stylist to the stars. His list of credits is like a who's who in the fashion-media-celebrity world, but that hasn't turned this sweetheart into a divo. Check out what he did with Kim Kardashian, who was the cover model for the September issue of YRB. This look is all Darius' doing and this is how amazing and unique celebrities can look when they trust someone as visionary and creative as Darius. Snaps for you my friend. Can I call you my friend Darius? I mean you had me at "I love Ted Rossi"! (Side joke: We shot this at the Ted Rossi showroom in midtown Manhattan, because my office and home are under construction. Sebastian and Ted, of Ted Rossi, are very old friends of mine and they happen to be friends with Darius, as well. That's me, below, balancing Ted Rossi bags on my head. The actual professional shots are sure to be better.)

Meeting Artist Peter Tunney: PAMELA PEKERMAN

Dear Bagistas,

Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting artist Peter Tunney, who's been gracious enough to host my companies upcoming Bag Some Art presentation for LaLucca Handbags at his Manhattan gallery. If you happen to be in New York City, check out the PT Experiment Gallery. Just minutes away from Central Park and a block away from Saint Patricks Cathedral, this vibrant space houses many of Peter's bold and graphic works, including a cheerful version of an eye exam over vintage 60s wallpaper (featured at right) and his famous "Don't Panic" slogan (seen below). If you're lucky, you'll get the chance to meet Peter himself or, even better, see him in action! After our meeting, I was really honored when Peter offered me a copy of his book The Peter Tunney Experiment and signed it with a very personal message: "4 the one and only blessed Pamela Pekerman, the time is ALLways NOW". We had just discusses the passing of my father, so the message really hit the spot. Thanks Peter!

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Peter is very philanthropic and along with Maria Bello, Josh Brolin, James Franco, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Natasha Koifman, Diane Lane, Michael Stahl-David, Oliver Stone, Madeleine Stowe, Charlize Theron and Olivia Wilde sits on the advisory board for Artists for Peace and Justice. Take a look at the organization's website to see all the miracles they are doing for those in Haiti - and, yes, they were doing them before the earthquake!
